NAMIBIA’s TOURISM POTENTIAL IN BRIEF
The beautiful country of Namibia located in the southwest region of the African continent is a richly endowed land boasting some of the continent’s unique natural and geographic wealth. With an impressive array of breathtaking landscapes, wildlife found in National Parks and Protected Areas, a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and a rare desert over 550 miles long on the Atlantic coast, it is certainly a land worth visiting. A land of contrasts and uncommon features, Namibia is a vast land the size of California where lions have adapted to live and thrive in desert environments. Most importantly, it is a land where the people are environmentally conscious, and conservation is seemingly embedded in their DNA. The government has done a remarkable job creating and designating CPAs- for Conservation Protected Areas across vast swaths of the territory. The Conservancy organizations and the government issued Conservation Awards in collaboration with the private sector and Community Based Organizations are measures that aren’t found in most of the continent, The fifty-five-million-year-old Namib desert is well known globally, and we believe more sporting events could be introduced in that famous desert to increase international tourist arrivals. We believe the current 66% that the tourism sector contributes to the country’s GDP could be increased to 77% by adding not only more products, but by reducing the current costs of operations in both the urban areas and the countryside. This increased awareness has led most nations to place a very high premium on adopting measures that mitigate the disastrous effects of global warming as manifested in devastating floods, drought and desertification negatively impacting lives and livelihoods. These occurrences remind us how fragile life on our planet could become thus threatening man’s existence through extinction.
